Turn the full-screen button into a maximize button.

Click it and the window fills the screen, the way Maximize works on Windows. No full screen and no new Space: your menu bar, Dock and other windows stay where they are. Click again to put the window back.

Free for 14 days, then £3 once for up to 3 Macs. For macOS 13 or later.

It works like Maximize on Windows

On a Mac, the full-screen button moves a window to a new Space. Maximus turns it into a maximize button: bigger window, same desktop.

  • In normal macOS, a double-click on the title bar zooms the window. Each app picks the size, often just big enough for its content, and some apps do nothing. With Maximus, a double-click maximizes the window.
  • Hold Option when you click, and macOS does its normal action.
  • Full screen is still there: hold the pointer over the full-screen button and choose Full Screen, or press Control-Command-F.
  • Dialogs, panels and windows with a fixed size keep their normal action.
  • With more than one display, the window fills the display that holds most of it.
  • Some apps limit the size of their windows. Those windows can stop a little short of the edge.

Questions

Doesn't macOS already do this?

Partly, from macOS 15. You can Option-click the full-screen button, or choose Fill from the menu that opens when you hold the pointer over it. You can also set a title-bar double-click to Fill in System Settings, but some apps ignore that setting. A plain click still opens full screen in a new Space.

Maximus makes the plain click and the double-click fill the screen, edge to edge, and a second click puts the window back. It also works on macOS 13 and 14.

Why does it need the Accessibility permission?

macOS lets an app move the windows of other apps only with this permission. Maximus uses it to see clicks on the full-screen button and the title bar, and to change the window size. It does not read what is in your windows.

Does it send my data anywhere?

No analytics and no tracking. The app goes online for two things only: to activate and check your license, and to check for updates. The privacy policy lists exactly what it sends.

How do I move my license to a new Mac?

On the old Mac, click the menu bar icon, choose License, then Deactivate This Mac. Then enter the key on the new Mac. One license works on up to 3 Macs at the same time.

Can I get a refund?

Yes. Email info@ethosoft.net within 30 days of your purchase for a full refund.
